Appeal to WTO on cigarette dispute with Thailand

10 May 2016. The Philippines asked for consulations with Thailand under provisions of the World Trade Organisationís dispute settlements process, saying its complaints about discriminatory practices for import cigarettes remain unresolved, the WTO said.

The dispute first went before the trade body in 2008. Manila complained that Thailand imposes harsher taxes and licensing on exported Philippine cigarettes than for domestic product, the WTO said in a dispute summary.

In 2011 the WTO Dispute Settlements Body ruled in favour of the Philippines, however the current request contends Thai compliance is inadequate, according to the WTO.
