Campaign against illicit trade underway

01 May 2008. Royal Malaysian Customs (RMC) has joined forces with the Confederation of Malaysian Tobacco Manufacturers (CMTM) to combat illicit tobacco trade through a grassroots campaign.

Launched 30 April, the Anti-Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products Campaign aims to address 90,000 retailers nationwide as well as smokers.

According to Martyn Griffiths, CMTM chairman, the comprehensive campaign includes in-store communication material, newsletters and educational programmes.

He said the campaign's key objective would be to urge retailers and consumers to buy and sell only legal tobacco products, as sources of the fake products are doubtful.

According to Datuk Seri Abd Rahman Abd Hamid, RMC director-general, campaign materials will provide retailers with a guide on identifying legal cigarette products through the current pack security features. (sra)
