China, Vietnam may invest in tobacco industry

18 May 2016. The government is in talks with investors from China and Vietnam to develop the local tobacco industry by constructing facilities for leaf processing and cigarette production, the Daily News reported.

Processing facilities would be set up in regions where tobacco is grown, including Tabora, the online newspaper said, citing remarks by Trade, Industry and Investment Minister Charles Mwijage to the National Assembly. A team of Chinese investors will visit Tabora later in May to study the feasibility of setting up a processing plant, the online site said.

“Our aim is to have serious investors who will be manufacturing cigarettes which conform to international standards using the locally produced raw material,” Mwijage reportedly said.
