Cig price increase from Jan 1

01 Jan 2019. The Moroccan government has introduced a new tax price on cigarettes, following the introduction of the country’s 2019 Finance Bill, Morocco World News reported.

Article 5 of the 2019 Finance Bill has increased the minimum tax rate on cigarettes from MAD 567 (EUR 51.45) to MAD 630 per 1,000 cigarettes, according to the report.

Marlboro Red Beyond and Marlboro Gold Beyond cigarette packs will cost MAD 35 (EUR 3.18) instead of MAD 32 from 1 January 2019. The price of all other Marlboro brand cigarettes are said to increase by MAD 2 (EUR 0.18). In addition to that, the price of two of the most commonly-consumed cigarette brands in the country, Marquise Medium and Marquise Classic, will increase by MAD 1.5 to reach MAD 21.5, Morocco World News reported.

According to the customs administration in the country, Morocco collected MAD 10.48 billion from the domestic consumption tax in 2017. This figure is expected to increase in 2019.

In October, the Minister of Economy, Mohamed Benchaaboun, commented on the new tax on cigarettes and said that it would generate more revenue, estimated at MAD 1.2 billion in 2019.

The country’s 2019 Finance Bill will also increase domestic consumption taxes on shisha tobacco from MAD 350 (EUR 31.76) to MAD 450 per kilogramme.
