Packaging has always been a highlight of tobacco industry reviews. But now that most forms of advertising for tobacco products have been banned or severely curtailed, packaging has moved to the front.

Which, of course, has prompted tobacco control organisations to focus heavily on packaging, the “last bastion of freedom”.

Whether it is the race as to which country can require the maximum space for tobacco warnings, with Uruguay proudly leading the table with 80 per cent, or even going as far as to legally require plain packaging, the times are changing, and tobacco control wants to make packaging as unattractive as possible.
