Officials pass ban on tobacco ads

02 Jan 2019. Policymakers have passed a blanket ban on cigarette and tobacco product advertising after a year-long legislative battle to pass the law, The Times of Israel reported.

The new law, which was proposed by Zionist Union MK Eitan Cabel and Likud MK Yehuda Glick, was passed by 45 votes to one, according to the report.

The blanket ban will extend to cigarettes, cigars, hookah products, rolling papers, non-tobacco herbal substances used for smoking and e-cigarettes. Advertising in stores selling tobacco products and adverts in print media, and smoking images used for “artistic or news purposes” will still be permitted, according to the news source.

Zionist Union MK Eyal Ben Reuven commented on the bill saying, “This is a historic day and an important victory in the war we are waging against the phenomenon of smoking in Israel.”
