Tobacco tax to rise above inflation

07 Oct 2021. Tax on tobacco, alcohol, fuel and property is set to rise above inflation in 2022, according to the latest States of Guernsey budget, reports BBC News.

Tobacco tax will rise by 7.5 per cent, while tax on Real Property, alcohol and fuel duties will increase by 4 per cent - above a 2.5 per cent anticipated inflation rate.

The 2022 budget showed tax revenue generated in 2021 was GBP 46 million higher than previously anticipated at GBP 508 million, the report said.

As a result of the tax increases, citizens will have to pay about GBP 0.47 more for a pack of 20 cigarettes. According to the report, the increases are expected to raise around GBP 1 million.

The budget is to be discussed on 2 November.
