Trump in U-turn on flavour ban

23 Nov 2019. US President Donald Trump has raised concerns about banning the sale of e-cigarette flavours, suggesting it could lead to illegal imports, according to The New York Times.

A White House meeting between Trump and industry advocates and lobbyists on different sides of the issue met to discuss the increases in youth vaping and vaping-related lung injuries that have been widely documented in the US during the past months.

Trump had previously said he would ban the sale of most flavoured e-cigarettes but appeared to have softened his position saying, “If you don’t give it to them, it’s going to come here illegally.” Comparing a potential ban to 1920s prohibition Trump said, “You just have to look at the history of it. Now, instead of having a flavour that’s at least safe, they’re going to be having a flavour that’s poison.”

According to the New York Times, Trump did reiterate that his administration would support raising the age for sales of e-cigarettes to 21, a move that would require congressional approval.
