UN Global Compact rejects tobacco companies

14 Sep 2017. The UN Global Compact, created to promote internationally accepted business standards, has opted to toss tobacco companies from its ranks, along with manufacturers of nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons.

“Enhancing the integrity of the initiative is critical to maintaining its trusted role in defining corporate sustainability leadership in support of the sustainable development goals,” the organisation said. Global Compact goals include improving human and labour rights, protecting the environment and combating corruption.

Delisting will be effective from 15 October. Philip Morris International has participated since 2015 and recently released its second UN Global Compact report. An online search revealed no other major manufacturers.
