USD 763 million in tobacco exports

11 Jan 2021. Tobacco exports in Zimbabwe have increased in 2020 compared to 2019 despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, reports The Street Journal.

According to the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB), tobacco exports for 2020 have brought in USD 763 million so far. Exports of tobacco by-products such as stems, scrap and fines went up by 7 million kg to 43 million kg compared with the previous year.

According to The Street Journal, Zimbabwe exports to many different destinations including Europe, the Far East, Africa, Middle East and the Americas with tobacco generating 30 per cent of the country’s foreign currency.

Despite COVID-19, Zimbabwe exported 187 million kg of tobacco in 2020, which is the same amount as last year, as reported by the TIMB.

“Global tobacco movements in the year 2020 have not been impacted significantly regardless of the global pandemic.

“The Far-East was the top destination for Zimbabwean tobacco as 33 percent of total exports were destined for China,” said TIMB in its latest tobacco update.
