Rule raises tax on cigs

02 Jan 2019. The government has introduced a 10 per cent excise tax on cigarette packs which will increase the price of a 25-pack of cigarettes up to NZD 40 (EUR 23.40), Television New Zealand (TVNZ) reported.

With the introduction of the new tax increase, the price of a 25-pack of cigarettes will rise by approximately four times the cost of NZD 11.95 (EUR 7) in 2006, according to the report.

The tobacco excise tax has increased by CPI plus 10 per cent each year since 2010 and the tax on a single cigarette has increased from 30 cents to 82 cents since 2009. The next series of tax increases in New Zealand are scheduled to end in 2020, TVNZ reported.
