39 mln kg of tobacco sold in 5 weeks

Tobacco growers have sold 39.8 million kg of tobacco for around MWK 45 billion (EUR 52 million) in the five weeks since the tobacco selling season began, Malawi24 reported, citing information released by Auction Holdings Limited Group (AHL).

An infographic released by AHL showed the average price paid for the tobacco in the five weeks since the opening day of the selling season on 11 May was USD 1.56/kg (EUR 1.32/kg).
36.2 million kg of burley tobacco has been sold at an average price of USD 1.47, 3.4 million kg of flue-cured tobacco has been sold at an average price of USD 2.49/kg, and 187,587 kg of dark-fired tobacco has been sold at an average price of USD 1.85/kg, according to the report.
AHL Group, which owns AHL Tobacco Sales, said 10.7 million kg of leaf was sold in week 5, compared to 8.1 million in week 4. The Group noted increased demand for thin tobacco styles had led to higher prices being paid for all tobacco types, Malawi24 reported.
Around 149 million kg of leaf is expected to be sold across the country this tobacco selling season, with demand estimated at 171 million kg, the news agency said.
