According to a report by the Brazilian Tobacco Growers Association (Afubra), the tobacco crop for the 2023 season is expected to yield 604,732 tons, an increase of 7.95 per cent, reports Kohltrade.

The Afubra report shows that the planted area for the southern region is predicted to yield 604,732 tons of tobacco in the new season compared to 560,181 tons last year.
“The number of plants registered in the entity’s Mutual System, by type of tobacco, is used. To these numbers, we add the number of plants on properties that are not registered in the system. Also considered is the percentage that producers planted above or below the quantities registered. These three factors give us the planted area,” explains Afubra´s president Benício Albano Werner.
In Rio Grande do Sul, the production estimate points to 256,725 tons of tobacco, cultivated in an area of 117,675 hectares, with a productivity of 2,182 kg/ha. Compared with the past crop, this means growers increased their area by 3.17 per cent and production should be 3.8 per cent higher. Productivity in the 2021/2022 harvest was, on average, 2,168 kg/ha, reports Kohltrade.
For Santa Catarina, the projection is 191,549 tons, 11.49 per cent higher than the previous year produced in an area of 77,489 hectares which represents a growth of 10.22 per cent. Productivity should lie at 2,472 kg/ha compared to 2,444 kg/ha last season.
In Paraná, production should reach 156,458 tons, in an area of 66,576 hectares with an estimated productivity of 2,350 kg/ha. The producers of Paraná increased their area with tobacco by 6.99 per cent, with an estimated increase in production of 10.93 per cent. Productivity in the past season was 2,267 kg/ha, reports Kohltrade.
“The past crop was, for a large part of tobacco growers, very profitable, with high lucrativeness. This encouraged some producers to increase their planted area,” says Werner of the increase in production area.
