Three quarters of Americans are in favour of raising the tobacco purchasing age limit to 21 according to a survey conducted by researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the LA Times reported.
The internet survey of 4,219 people aged 18 or older, published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine, found 50 per cent of participants strongly favoured raising the minimum age from 18 to 21. Another 25 percent were found to be somewhat in favour of the measure, the newspaper said.
Hawaii became the first US state in June to increase the minimum age for purchase, possession and use of tobacco and vaping products from 18 to 21. The law is to come into effect from January 2016.
