Proposition 29, the ballot initiative to raise the California state cigarette tax by USD 1 (EUR 0.79), is gaining support in the ongoing count of absentee ballots, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Pro and con votes are separated by less than 1 per cent, or 16,778 votes, with 436,000 votes to be counted before the 6 July deadline to submit official results, the newspaper said in a story on 16 June. Votes not counted on the 5 June state election include mail-in ballots and provisional ballots cast by voters at polling stations where their names did not appear on registration lists. (pi)
