Amcor Tobacco Packaging will close a German plant by the end of 2014 in response to what the company said was an overcapacity in gravure printing in western Europe, and build a facility to serve the growing Indonesian market.
Production from the plant in Neumunster, Germany, will be shifted to other western European locations, Amcor said. The new plant in East Java is expected to be fully operational by late next year.
“Amcor will be the first international tobacco packaging player to establish a manufacturing presence in Indonesia, bringing new jobs, technology, and innovation to the country," said Amcor Tobacco Packaging President Peter Konieczny.
Amcor Tobacco Packaging is based in Zurich, Switzerland, and operates 23 plants in 19 countries. The tobacco-and-specialty packaging unit of Australia-based Amcor Ltd employs more than 4,000 people.
