Amendments to 2009 flavours ban target resized cigars

Amendments to the 2009 prohibition of flavours in cigarettes, little and blunt cigars to take effect 14 Dec will end the practice of resizing cigars to circumvent the ban, the health ministry said.

Most flavours and selected additives will be prohibited in cigars weighing more than 1.6 grams but less than 6 g, Health Canada said. The ban also applies to cigars employing tipping paper or which do not feature a wrapper fitted in spiral form, the ministry said.
“Resized cigars in the same flavours as those that were prohibited by the 2009 (Cracking Down on Tobacco Marketing Aimed at Youth Act) have emerged on the Canadian market. The regulations introduced today have targeted these products by closing the loophole that allowed manufacturers to simply change the weight of little cigars or remove their filter to continue producing them,” Health Canada said.
