A series of severe anti-smoking measures for the world’s second largest tobacco market gained overwhelming approval in a second reading before the lower-house Duma, Reuters reported.

A ban on advertising for tobacco products and sales by kiosks are among the measures contained in the bill. Smoking bans in most indoor public places will be phased in starting in June with educational institutions. The margin of approval was 442, with one vote against and one abstention, virtually guaranteeing final passage. One more Duma vote and by the upper house is required before the bill can be signed into law by President Vladimir Putin, who supports the restrictions, Reuters reported. (pi)
