Ukraine's parliament on Thursday adopted an anti-smoking law, which significantly widens the previous legislation of 2010.
The law, which will bring the former Soviet republic into line with European standards ahead of the Euro-2012 tournament, will ban smoking in all sports buildings, in cafe and restaurants, at bus, tram or train stops, in official buildings and on public transport.
Restaurant and cafe managers, who had so far been able to allocate part of their establishments to smokers, will be banned from doing so.
Special smoking areas can be set up in business enterprises, airports and train stations provided equipment for smoke removal is installed.
The law will come in force when President Viktor Yanukovich signs it. He has 10 days to either sign the bill or send it back to parliament.
Ukraine is co-hosting the Euro 2012 football championship in June with neighbouring Poland. (pi)
