The California Senate Appropriations Committee reported out a package of anti-tobacco bills that include raising the smoking age and empowering local governments to seek voter approval for higher tobacco taxes, the San Francisco Chronicle said,
Normal procedure was set aside to get the package to the Senate floor in time for consideration during a special session on health issues called by Governor Jerry Brown. Among the measures under consideration are raising the smoking age to 21 from 18, subjecting e-cigarettes to the same restrictions as combustible products and allowing county governments to put increases in local tobacco taxes to voters for approval, the newspaper said.
