Ban on disposable e-cigs considered

The Scottish government is considering a ban on disposable vapes because they pose a threat to the environment, reports BBC News.

In a campaign against throwaway e-cigarettes, Friends of the Earth Scotland demanded that companies be held responsible for the design of these cheap products that contain lithium batteries.
Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Humza Yousaf said a review would give “consideration” to a potential ban of the devices, according to BBC News.
The single-use vapes contain lithium batteries and copper as well as plastic which makes them so-called Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) which must be disposed of at a recycling centre or at the shop where the device was purchased.
Although large shops must legally take back products such as disposable vapes to be recycled for free and smaller retailers have to finance the collection and treatment of these products when they become waste, the problem remains that not all users bring the products back.
Dundee-based campaigner Laura Young collected discarded vapes in the streets and recently picked up one device per minute during a one hour walk, according to BBC News.
Mr Yousaf said Young had sone “an incredible job” and said Public Health Scotland would be examining the impact of vaping and devising an action plan in the autumn.
“We will ask stakeholders with the relevant expertise to examine the evidence and assess what action the Scottish government and other partners should take. That will include consideration of a potential ban,” he said.
