The government has put the ban on showing smoking scenes in films and TV on hold after filmmakers raised reservations on the practical difficulties in implementing the order, reports the Times of India.
This comes after the Information and Broadcasting Ministry asked other ministries concerned with the implementation of the ban to review the issue, because of concerns over practical difficulties in implementing the new notification in films.
On 14 November, the health ministry had issued an order banning smoking scenes on screen demanding that cigarette products displayed in old films and TV programmes be blurred or edited and scenes be accompanied by a scroll with a disclaimer during the film. As for new films "strong editorial justification for display of tobacco products or their use will have to be given to the Censor Board".
The Indian film industry is one of the largest industries in the country, producing over 1,000 films a year. (pi)
