Ban on tobacco in Beverly Hills

Under a new historic ban that allows for only a few exceptions, businesses are no longer allowed to sell tobacco products in Beverly Hills, reports CBS Los Angeles.

The new law came into effect on New Year’s Day and means that all businesses are now prohibited from selling tobacco products. Exceptions have been made for existing cigar lounges and hotels selling to guests and some store can get a limited exemption if they are able to prove that the ban will cause “undue hardship”, according to CBS Los Angeles.
In June 2019, the city council of Beverly Hills became the first in the nation to pass such a law having already limited where smoking was allowed. It had also previously banned the sale of flavoured tobacco products.
“It was over 30 years ago that Beverly Hills became the first City in California to prohibit smoking inside restaurants,” said Mayor Lester Friedman. “Since then, we have continued to implement policies that will ultimately save lives.”
