BAT aims to expand cigarette production

Three years after shutting down its factory in Petaling Jaya, British American Tobacco (BAT) considers expanding its cigarette manufacturing in Malaysia again, The Edge Financial Daily reported.

BAT opened a new manufacturing facility in Johor Baru last October, which has the capacity to produce about 150 million cigarette sticks, the report said. “We have very consciously done that because we want to retain that manufacturing licence. If we withdraw completely, there is a risk we could lose (the licence),” BAT managing director Erik Stoel was quoted as saying. “Pending the evolution of the market, we could consider whether or not, on the longer term, it could be interesting to produce and manufacture [more] cigarettes in Malaysia again,” he added.
In 2016, BAT closed its factory in Petaling Jaya and sold it for MYR 218 million (EUR 46.8 million), affecting 230 employees. A major factor was the increase in the market share of illicit cigarettes as a result of a rise of excise duties. BAT's profit fell by 4.89 per cent in 2018 and revenues decreased by 3.2 per cent, the report said.
