BAT gains share in major markets

British American Tobacco (BAT) increased market share in its top 40 markets but shipped fewer cigarettes as European consumers turned to fine-cut tobaccos to roll their own smokes, the company said.

“Fine-cut performed well with strong volume growth of 6.7 per cent to 10 billion sticks equivalent in western Europe, mainly in Spain, Italy, Poland, Belgium and France,” BAT said. Cigarette volume declined 3.4 per cent to 332 billion sticks, or by 3.2 per cent with fine-cut stick equivalent included. The data apply to the six months ended 30 June.
Within the regions, cigarette volume in Asia-Pacific rose 5 per cent to 100 billion sticks and declined by about 10 per cent to 64 billion sticks in the Americas. Declines of five billion sticks were reported both for western Europe, to 57 billion sticks, and eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa, to 111 billion units.
Six-month operating profit rose 5 per cent to GBP 2.8 billion (EUR 3.2 billion) on revenue that increased 2 per cent to GBP 7.6 billion, the company said. “We performed well during the first half of the year with strong pricing momentum, increased market share and continued growth in our Global Drive Brands,” said Chief Executive Officer Nicandro Durante.
BAT is switching to unified software for its global operations that will drive a new operating model with revised organisation structures, standardised processes and shared back-office services. The company said the SAP system has been tested and will be rolled out over a four-year period beginning in the final business quarter of this year.
