BAT increases market share in Germany

Cigarette manufacturer British American Tobacco (BAT) has sold 22.9 billion sticks of cigarettes in Germany in 2006 – thus stabilising sales at the previous year's level – and increased its market share for cigarettes by 1 per cent to 24.6 per cent.

The Pall Mall brand was particularly successful with a growth rate of 60 per cent and a market share of 5.1 per cent. The market share in roll-your own products increased from 19.7 per cent to 22.5 per cent, reports BAT. This has made BAT the market leader in the RYO segment.
Total cigarette consumption in Germany decreased by 2.7 per cent to 152 billion sticks in 2006. However, legal and illegal imports have grown by a staggering 24 per cent: from 18.4 billion sticks in 2005 to 25.1 billion sticks in 2006. The losses in taxes and profits would amount to € 14 million a day, reports BAT. The company forecasts a further rise in illegal imports by 20 per cent this year. (ci)
