NETHERLANDS
BAT issued with USD 1.12 million tax bill

British American Tobacco are being accused of owing Dutch authorities USD 1.12 million in unpaid taxes, The Guardian reported.

BAT have been accused by the Dutch authorities of not paying taxes on money that was channelled through the Netherlands between 2003 and 2016. The unpaid bill concerns internal fees that were paid for by Dutch subsidiaries for loans provided by BAT’s UK holding company. The internal fees are said to have been inflated in order to lower taxes due in the Netherlands, the Guardian reported.
BAT are disputing the claim and a spokesman was quoted as saying, “British American Tobacco fully complies with all applicable tax legislation in each of the 200 markets where we operate around the world and we conduct all transactions that occur between BAT group companies using the internationally recognised arm’s length principle. These transactions are fully in line with what independent parties would have paid, thus ensuring that the right amount of tax is paid. We strongly disagree with the Dutch tax authorities assessment and as such, we are appealing this claim.”
BAT is one of the largest companies in the UK and is worth around USD 87 billion. The company employs more than 60,000 worldwide and last year paid approximately USD 2.6 billion in taxes. The news of this tax bill comes a week after BAT announced plans to cut 2,300 jobs by 2020 as part of an overall shift towards non-tobacco products.
