Roberta Palazetti, president of British American Tobacco in Japan, said BAT will expand marketing of its “glo” tobacco heating device to Tokyo and Osaka in July, Reuters reported.
BAT remains on track for a nationwide glo launch later this year, Palazetti reportedly told a press conference.
In a separate story, Reuters cited Japan Tobacco Chief Executive Mitsuomi Koizumi as saying capacity for JT’s Ploom TECH heating stick would be increased to 20 billion sticks next year from a goal of five billion by the end of this year as the company expands distribution. Koizumi said he expected vaping products, including tobacco heaters, could account for one quarter of the Japanese market by the end of 2018, and confirmed JT expects its domestic cigarette volume to fall nearly 10 per cent this year.
Philip Morris International’s IQOS is the only electronic tobacco heater currently available nationwide. Reuters said sales in April represented10 per cent of the market, up from 7.6 per cent in January.
