The Beijing government set up a social media site to enable citizens to upload videos of smokers violating the ban on lighting up in public places to take effect 1 June, the Wall Street Journal said.
WeChat, a social messaging app, allows uploading of images or video. The site includes the full text of the regulations and information on the dangers of smoking, according to the Journal blog China Real Time Report. Smoking will be banned from indoor public places, including restaurants and bars.
Fines of CNY 200 (EUR 31) for persons and CNY 10,000 for businesses may be levied against offenders, according to the blog.
As part of the runup, citizens are being asked to vote on which of three hand signals should be selected to allow them to signal smokers who light up in public places that their actions are offensive and to please stop.
