Brazil is considering legalizing e-cigarettes

E-cigarettes have been prohibited in Brazil since 2009, but that could soon change, reports The World.

The federal health sanitary agency ANVISA issued a ruling against the marketing of electronic devices for smoking in 2019. However, this decision could soon change as tobacco companies are pressuring the agency for a more flexible regulation that would allow sales. ANVISA is expected to revisit the issue this year, but so far it has not commented, the report said.
Some people argue that if e-cigarettes are available on the street and on the internet, so why should they be banned? They say that without the ban, the country could at least tax their sale.
Stella Bialous, a Brazilian tobacco expert and professor at the University of California at San Francisco, disagrees. “Once the product is legally allowed to be commercialized, it gets into the distribution network of the tobacco companies, which have one of the best distribution systems around.”
In 2019, less than 1 per cent of Brazilians used e-cigarettes, mostly in large, urban areas. However, legalisation could quickly push those numbers up since it would make access easier in other parts of the country, Bialous said.
