According to State Fund Agriculture, Bulgaria will provide BGN 70.5 million (EUR 36 million) to its tobacco growers for 2022 under a programme to support their transition to alternative livelihoods, reports SeeNews.

The funding will be provided to producers who have grown tobacco during at least one year during the 2007 – 2009 reference period, the fund said in a press release.
Tobacco producers who continue to carry out agricultural activity are eligible to receive subsidies under the programme. Owners of animal farms or bee families are also eligible for receiving subsidies.
The aid has been provided since 2015. The amount of the grants depends on the volume of the purchased tobacco and its plant variety.
Earlier in March, Bulgaria’s government said it had approved the disbursement of about BGN 213 million in subsidies to farmers to compensate for the rising costs of farming inputs.
