Buying prices of tobacco increased

An agreement forged by the government has led tobacco traders and farmers to raise the price of Ilocos region’s tobacco crop.

Representatives of tobacco manufacturers and traders, farmers and the National Tobacco Administration (NTA) have agreed to raise the buying price of Class AA tobacco by P 10 . The buying price for tobacco under other classes was increased by P 9.50.
With the price increase, Class AA tobacco will sell at P 61 a kilogram; Class A at P 59; Class B at P 57; Class C at P 55; Class D at P 50; Class E at P 49; Class F1 at P 45; Class F2 at P 42 and reject at P 23.
“It is a good start to address the price of tobacco and other concerns [of the industry],” Eric Singson, representative of Ilocos Sur province said. “I hope it will inspire our farmers to plant more this season.”
Singson and Governor Deogracias Victor Savellano led local officials and leaders of farmers’ groups in the tripartite conference held at the NTA offices in Quezon City.
The increase, they said, was the biggest granted as previous tripartite conferences usually yielded an increase of an average of P 1.50.
Singson said he would push for the passage of a bill that would require manufacturers to use at least 75 percent of locally produced tobacco in the production of cigarettes in the country.
Had the increase been lower, Singson and Savellano would have asked farmers not to plant tobacco and shift to other cash crops because they would not earn much from tobacco production.
Tobacco, particularly the Virginia type, is the top cash crop in the four tobacco-producing provinces of Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, La Union and Abra. Five years ago, the four tobacco-producing provinces received a combined share of P 2.4 billion but this has gone down to only P 700 million, Singson said. (sra)
