CDC investigates link between e-cig use and rare lung illness

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that it is investigating if a cluster of lung illnesses reported in 14 states is linked to e-cigarette use, Reuters reported.

The CDC said that it needed more information to determine if the illness was caused by vaping, according to the report. It is currently working with health departments in Wisconsin, Illinois, California, Indiana and Minnesota on the investigation.
Since 28 June, there have been nearly 100 reported cases of severe lung illness which has been linked to e-cigarette use, predominately among teens and young adults, the CDC was quoted as saying in a statement on 17 August.
“Patients experienced coughing, shortness of breath and fatigue. Some had serious breathing difficulties that required ventilation,” Reuters wrote.
The popular e-cigarette maker Juul Labs commented on the news in a statement emailed to Reuters, saying, “Like any health-related events reportedly associated with the use of vapor products, we are monitoring these reports.
“These reports reaffirm the need to keep all tobacco and nicotine products out of the hands of youth through significant regulation on access and enforcement. We also must ensure illegal products, such as counterfeit, copycat, and those that deliver controlled substances, stay out of the market and away from youth.”
The company added that, according to some media reports, several cases of the lung illness involved THC, which is found in cannabis. According to the report, the company said it does not sell products containing THC.
