The states of New York, South Carolina, Utah, Hawaii and Missouri increase their taxes on cigarettes as of today.
In South Carolina, which previously had the lowest cigarette tax in the country at USD 0.07 per pack, the cost of cigarettes increased today by USD 0.50 (EUR 0.40) per pack, marking the first increase in the tax in 33 years.
Under an emergeny bill, New York raised its state tax on cigarettes by an additional USD 1.60 to USD 4.35 a pack, bringing the total tax burden (including city and federal levies) for a single pack to USD 6.85 and the retail price to above USD 10.
In Hawaii taxes increas by US 0.40 to USD 3.00 per pack.
In New Mexico a hike of USD 0.75 takes the tax there to USD 1.66 per pack.
Utah adds USD 1.00 to take its tax to USD 1.70 per pack. (pi)
