Two officials of Continental Tobacco, a privately held Kenyan company, were handed over to Uganda police after growers said they have not been paid since 2009, the Uganda Daily Monitor said on its website.
General Manager Morris Micheni and Chief Financial Officer Michael Mwangi were handed over after testifying before the parliamentary Agriculture Committee, the Monitor said.
More than 10,000 tobacco growers are demanding UGX 23.6 billion (EUR 742,000) from the company. Company officials told the agriculture panel a difficult world economy left them holding unsold product, and that farmers would be paid when the tobacco was sold, according to the Monitor. (pi)
