The scientific board of the Coresta has approved the Controlled Atmosphere (CA) technique for the fumigation of tobacco.
Coresta published the guideline "Controlled Atmosphere Parameters for the Control of the Cigarette Beetle" in which industry standards for the use of Controlled Atmosphere in the treatment of stored tobacco are set out.
Controlled Atmosphere is an alternative to phosphine fumigation which has raised concerns after the advent of phosphine-resistant insects. The technology kills all cigarette beetle life stages in stored tobacco by artificially engineering an atmosphere with lower oxygen levels in a specially constructed, air-tight chamber. (pi)
