Correction: Trend toward fewer smokers accelerates

Correcting previous version to show age-group percentages in third paragraph represent survey respondents: Fewer Japanese are smoking and the rate of decline is increasing, according to a survey by Japanese Tobacco.

The survey shows the rate of decline as measured in August of this year was 2.2 percentage points compared with 1 percentage point in the 2010 survey. In absolute numbers, the survey projects there were 2.2 million fewer smokers in 2011, or double the decline of 1.1 million in the preceding survey. The number of smokers dropped to an estimated 22.8 million in the most recent survey, representing 21.7 per cent of the population.
Among survey respondents, the percentage of answers from persons aged 60 an up was 38.2 per cent. The percentage drops to 16.5 percent in the group aged 50 to 59. Only 12.6 per cent of the youngest survey age group respondended. That group is comprised of persons aged 20 to 29.
Japan Tobacco said the declining trend is due to various factors including the aging of society, growing awareness of health risks associated with smoking, tighter regulations and tax and price hikes in October of last year. Survey results were collated from 19,064 responses. (ci)
