Corrective statements to appear on cig packs

Cigarette packaging will soon sport court-ordered corrective statements that point out the adverse health effects of smoking, CNN reported.

This court order is the result of a 1999 lawsuit the United States Department of Justice brought against the tobacco industry that claimed the industry violated civil racketeering laws and committed civil fraud over the course of 50 years in the United States, according to the report.
In 2006, federal Judge, Gladys Kessler, ordered the tobacco industry and tobacco companies to put “corrective statements” about the negative health effects of smoking on tobacco product packaging, company websites, on national newspaper websites, in print and in televised ads, CNN reported.
The corrective statements appeared on company websites, in national newspapers and websites and in televised ads for a limited amount of time in 2018. Now, statements will be found on cigarette packaging as onserts for a limited amount of time in the United States.
Mary Rouvelas, senior counsel for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network commented on the court order saying, “Corrective statements are essentially geared towards preventing and restraining future harm.
“Once they start shipping, they will appear in the retailers between two days and two weeks after, depending on how much volume that retailer goes through.”
