LUXEMBOURG
Cost of smoking to rise

From the 1 February, the cost of tobacco in Luxembourg will rise, reported sol.de and RTL Today.

The change in law was approved by the Government Council on the 17 January and will be put into practice from the 1 February onwards. According to the report from sol.de, this means that the cost of a carton of cigarettes will rise by EUR 0.46. Rolling tobacco will also be affected, rising from EUR 16.50 to EUR 18.25 per kilo.
According to RTL today, depending on the quantities of cigarettes purchased, the calculation of the sale price will also rise, from 1.65 per cent to 2.25 per cent. Cigarette manufacturers will also have to apply a tax of EUR 12.25 per 1,000 units, an increase of EUR 0.25.
Around 80 per cent of the cigarettes currently sold in Luxembourg are subsequently transported into foreign countries, stated sol.de. These are predominantly countries which share a border with Luxembourg, such as Germany. Luxembourg currently makes around EUR 500 billion annually through the sale of tobacco.
