Cuba has won its 25 year long legal battle over the US trademark rights to its Cohiba cigars, reports AFP.

As reported by AFP, the US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board has cancelled US-based General Cigar’s trademark registrations for the term ‘Cohiba’ for cigars, said Habanos SA, a joint venture between Altadis of Britain and state-owned Cubatabaco.
Due to the US trade embargo, Cuban cigars cannot legally be sold in the US and General Cigar is currently selling a non-Cuban version of the Cohiba brand. The new ruling means that Cubatabaco is now able to register the Cohiba brand trademark in the US despite not being able to legally sell its cigars in the States.
Tobacco is one of Cuba’s main sources of export revenue and the Cohiba brand trademark is considered the best of its 27 types of cigars marketed in over 100 countries and was also reportedly Fidel Castro’s favourite brand, reports AFP.
General Cigar said it will appeal the ruling.
