Denmark to ban cigarette sales to anyone born after 2010

Denmark has unveiled plans to ensure that future generations are tobacco-free, and is considering banning the sale of cigarettes and other nicotine products to people born after 2010, reports The Guardian.

“Our hope is that all people born in 2010 and later will never start smoking or using nicotine-based products”, health minister Magnus Heunicke was quoted as saying. “If necessary, we are ready to ban the sale (of these products) to this generation by progressively raising the age limit,” he said.
Currently, Danes must be 18 years old to buy cigarettes or e-cigarettes. According to the health ministry, about 31 per cent of 15-to-29-year-olds smoke. A survey commissioned by the Danish Cancer Society found that 64 per cent of people surveyed were in favour of the Danish government’s plan, and 67 per cent among those aged 18-34, the report said.
Denmark’s plans follow New Zealand’s announcement to ban the sale of tobacco to young people by gradually raising the age limit for sales from 2027. The Malaysian government is currently considering similar plans to ban the sale of cigarettes to the next generation and pass them in parliament.
