Passengers entering New Zealand will be limited to 50 duty-free cigarettes from 1 Nov, a reduction of three quarters from the current 200 that officials say will bring national policy into line with Australia.
Previously announced as part of the budget, cutting the duty-free tobacco allowance should raise NZD 50 million (EUR 31 million) over a full financial year, the Health Ministry has said. Australia lowered its duty-free allowance in 2012.
Gift concessions for parcels of cigarettes sent from abroad also will be eliminated, according to a statement by Customs Service Comptroller Carolyn Tremain. Non-cigarette products will be limited to 50 grams of tobacco.
