E-cig use rises slightly among young people

A new report from Public Health England (PHE) shows that the number of children and teenagers who have tried vaping has doubled in five years, The Telegraph reported.

Official figures show around one in six children aged between 11 and 18 has tried e-cigarettes, with many saying they liked the flavours. This is up from 8 per cent compared to 2014 – the data from 2018 show that 15.9 per cent of those in this age group said they have tried vaping, according to the report.
According to the report, Prof John Newton, PHE health improvement director, said that Britain was not seeing the kind of trends seen in the United States, where up to one in five young people are estimated to be regularly using e-cigarettes. “In contrast to recent media reports in the US, we are not seeing a surge in e-cigarette use among young people in Britain,” he was quoted as saying.
The study, conducted by researchers from King's College London and commissioned by PHE, shows that five years ago, 70 per cent of children and young people who tried vaping had previously tried a cigarette. Only 46 percent of those who experimented with e-cigarettes last year had tried smoking before, according to the survey of 2,000 young people. The scientists expressed concerns that more young people could be trying vaping to experiment or because they think it is "cool" and do not know that e-cigarettes also contain nicotine, the report said.
