E-cigarette sales rise between 2020 and 2022

Sales of e-cigarettes in the United States jumped by almost 47 per cent from 2020 to 2022 a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found, according to Medical Xpress.

The study shows that in January 2020 15.5 million e-cigarettes were sold compared to 22.7 million units in December 2022 – a rise of nearly 47 per cent. The hike was especially big amongst sweet flavours that are preferred by young users, reports Medical Xpress.
“After January 2020, sales of mint and other flavored prefilled cartridges ceased, and disposable e-cigarettes in fruit, sweet, and other flavors increased,” the study, published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, showed. “Disposable e-cigarettes in youth-appealing flavors are now more commonly sold than prefilled units,” it noted.
The increase in e-cigarettes sales has happened despite the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) vowing to enforce rules against unauthorized flavoured vaping products because of their popularity amongst youths. It is worth noting that although e-cigarette sales increased over the three year period, sales declined by over 12 per cent between May and December 2022, which could be down to flavour bans put in place in several states at the end of the year, reports Medical Xpress.
According to the CDC study, “States such as Massachusetts, which have well-enforced comprehensive flavor restrictions, have experienced large and sustained declines in total e-cigarette sales.” Also, the study says that “use of tobacco products among young persons declined” after flavoured tobacco products were restricted in certain areas.
