Major supermarket chain confirms it is trialling the sale of nicotine-free e-cigarette products in stores, the New Zealand Herald reported.
In a move heralded as a step towards the mainstream sale of vapour products in the country, Progressive Enterprises, owner of major supermarket chain Countdown and grocers FreshChoice and SuperValue, confirmed it began selling vapour products in 20 stores in December.
Vapour retailer, Vapo, told the Herald it was providing “beginner” nicotine-free e-cigarette products to the supermarket chains. The company said it had seen a spike in sales over the New Year period. "We assume this is on account of supermarkets being a great place for new vapers to conveniently purchase an e-cigarette/vaping device without having to stop by a dedicated vape shop," company founder Ben Pryor was quoted as saying.
The sale of nicotine-containing e-cigarette products is still illegal in New Zealand though they are widely available, the Herald said.
