Ajman, the smallest of the UAE’s seven emirates, has banned the sale, import, storage and possession of chewing tobacco.
The municipal authorities will launch an inspection campaign to ensure that all grocerers and food outlets are in compliance with the new ban.
The municipality will impose an AED 10,000 (EUR 1,750) fine on anyone violating the rule.
Speaking to the Khaleej Times, Khaled Al Houseny, head of the health directorate in Ajman, said the decision was taken after the municipality inspectors noticed that the products, which affect the cleanliness and environment of the emirate, were originally sold everywhere. (pi)
