EU halts tobacco exports from Belarus

As the war in Ukraine rages on, the European Union steps up its support for Ukraine and intensifies sanctions against the aggressors Russia and Belarus, reports ntv.

EU states agree on new sanctions against Russia's ally Belarus. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is considered an ally and military supporter of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in the war against Ukraine. Russian attacks on the neighbouring country are also conducted from Belarusian territory, the report said.
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced punitive measures against Belarus on 27 February, calling the Lukashenko government "the other aggressor in this war". According to von der Leyen, the target is the country's most important sectors. “This will stop their exports of products from mineral fuels to tobacco, wood and timber, cement, iron and steel. We will also extend to Belarus the export restrictions we introduced on dual-use goods for Russia. This will also avoid any risks of circumvention of our measures against Russia. In addition, we will sanction those Belarusians helping the Russian war effort. All these measures come on top of the strong package that I presented to you yesterday, agreed by our international partners,” von der Leyen said. Under this package, important Russian banks will be excluded from the SWIFT system.
The EU had already enacted far-reaching sanctions against Belarus last year, then because of Lukashenko's crackdown on the opposition and the forced rerouting of a Ryanair plane. On 1 March, the UK had also imposed sanctions on several organisations and individuals from Belarus, including the chief of the Belarusian general staff as well as three other high-ranking representatives of the military leadership and two military companies, the report said.
