The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released advanced notice of proposed rulemaking in consideration of lowering nicotine levels in cigarettes sold in the US, and is seeking public comment on the proposal, the regulator said.
Following its July 2017 announcement of intent to lower the nicotine level in cigarettes to “minimally or non-addictive levels”, the FDA has released proposed details of a new nicotine product standard, including how the policy may take shape and estimates of its impact. The FDA said these estimates included one scenario where an additional 5 million adults in the US would give up smoking cigarettes within one year of implementation.
The FDA is seeking comments and research on topics related to the proposal, which need to be submitted by 14 June.
