FDA independent review on menthol impact

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said its tobacco analysts will conduct an independent review of available evidence on the impact of menthol additives in cigarettes and will submit a draft report to outside experts in July.

After input from the “external review panel,” the FDA will solicit public comment on its “preliminary scientific assessment,” the agency said. The FDA had promised to update the public in about 90 days after receiving a menthol report in March from the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC), and a separate document from tobacco industry members of TPSAC.
The 27 June FDA statement promised a review by experts from its Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), “of the available science related to the impact of menthol in cigarettes on public health including peer-reviewed literature, secondary data analyses, and independent CTP analyses of relevant large data sets.”
“CTP’s extensive preliminary analysis and evaluation of the available science relating to public health impact of the use of menthol in cigarettes includes a thorough review of scientific literature and data in the areas of chemistry, toxicology, and physiology; patterns of menthol smoking; biomarkers of exposure to toxic constituents; and initiation of cigarette smoking, dependence, and cessation,” the FDA said.
