FDA proposes NNN limit for smokeless products

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has proposed a rule to cap N-nitrosonornicotine content in products like moist snuff and chewing tobacco, saying NNN is a “potent carcinogenic agent” that significantly raises the risk of oral cancer.

FDA is proposing an allowable limit of 1.0 microgram per gram of tobacco on a dry weight basis. Manufacturers would be required to prove NNN content in their products does not exceed the limit when stored under normal conditions through the product expiration date. Retailers would not be affected by the regulation.
NNN is a tobacco-specific nitrosamine produced in varying amounts when tobacco is cured, processed and stored. Public comments on the proposed rule will be accepted until 10 April, 2017. The proposal and instructions how to file comments is available at: https://goo.gl/sQzXhS
